Meeting to discuss fire debris removal

The Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement is inviting Lahaina residents to participate in a discussion on debris removal at 5:30 p.m. today at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s McCoy Studio Theater.

The meeting will include informational presentations by Maui County, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and CNHA representatives, as part of CNHA’s Native Hawaiian Convention that began Tuesday.

Officials are nearly finished with removing hazardous household materials from properties impacted by the fire. Once that is completed, the Army Corps of Engineers will move forward with debris removal on properties where owners opt for government assistance. The county is working to create a program for those who want to hire private contractors.
